Case Study

Requirement / Problem

A client approached us looking for 2-off pump units for pumping an unusual and wide mixture of chemicals at a specific duty and flowrate.  The unit was to be utilised in Atex Zone 2 Hazardous Areas and was required to be packaged within lifting frames that were certified to the offshore containers lifting standard, DNV 2.7-1.  Further restrictions included a maximum lifting weight of 1,400 Kg and having the capability of operating on small rigs with no available air source.  The units were also to be designed for use in an ambient temperature range of 10°C to 50°C.

Solution

Zone 2 Lightweight DNV 2.7-1 Chemical Triplex Unit

Alba designed and manufactured a hydraulically driven pump unit which was split into 3 separate aluminium DNV 2.7-1 certified lifting frames.  Each skid (engine skid, hydraulic skid and pump skid) weigh less than 1,400 Kg.  The engine and hydraulic skids are installed and locked on site back to back with a driveshaft installed between the engine and hydraulic pump drive.  The remote pumping skid has 5m jumper hoses with quick connections to the hydraulic skid for connecting to the hydraulic system bulkhead.  The Cummins engine is rated at 100BHP @ 2400rpm, is ATEX EN1834-1 certified and is fitted with a spring starter to enable starting when an air source isn't available.  The pump skid included the Wanner triplex diaphragm pump, chosen based on performance and the diaphragm design / material and option of hastelloy fluid end enabling the pumping of the specialised wide mixture of chemicals.  A polypropylene centrifugal type pump for charging the triplex pump is also installed on the pump skid, while a second remote polypropylene centrifugal pump is provided for fluid transfer, both of these being hydraulically driven.
